Are you considering an IUD insertion as a long-term birth control option? At Mint Integrative Health, we offer IUD placement services in a comfortable and professional environment. Our clinic provides personalized consultations to help you choose the best contraception for you.
Types of IUDs
We offer both hormonal and non-hormonal IUDs, ensuring that you have options that suit your health and lifestyle.
Copper IUD (Non-Hormonal)
- Made of plastic with a copper coil wrapped around the stem or arms
- Prevents pregnancy by releasing copper ions, which are toxic to sperm and eggs
- Effective for up to 10 years
- May cause heavier or longer periods, particularly in the first few months
Hormonal IUDs
Hormonal IUDs release progestin (levonorgestrel), which:
- Thickens cervical mucus to block sperm
- Thins the uterine lining to prevent implantation
- May suppress ovulation
Available options:
- Mirena (52 mg levonorgestrel) – Effective for up to 8 years
- Kyleena (19.5 mg levonorgestrel) – Effective for up to 5 years

Effectiveness and Benefits
IUDs are one of the most effective forms of reversible contraception, with a 99% effectiveness rate at preventing pregnancy. Their typical one-year failure rate is less than 1%, making them significantly more reliable than birth control pills or condoms. One major advantage is that IUDs do not require daily attention, unlike oral contraceptives.
They are also a great option for individuals who cannot use estrogen-based birth control. Copper IUDs are effective immediately and can serve as the most effective form of emergency contraception if inserted within seven days of unprotected sex. Hormonal IUDs often result in lighter periods and reduced cramping over time, making them a convenient and low-maintenance birth control option.
What to Expect During and After IUD Insertion
IUD Insertion Procedure
At Mint, we make the IUD insertion process simple, comfortable, and stress-free. The first step is to book your IUD screening call, which can be done online or by phone. If you don’t see an available time online, give us a call, and we’ll accommodate you as soon as possible.
During your screening call, one of our doctors will discuss your birth control options, help you choose the right hormonal or copper IUD, and determine if any additional tests—such as STI screening or Pap smears—are needed. We will also send your IUD prescription to your pharmacy and schedule your IUD insertion at the best time in your cycle for optimal placement.
Your IUD insertion appointment will be calm, unhurried, and focused on your comfort. We offer ultrasound-guided IUD placement, ensuring the most precise positioning for effectiveness and safety. After the procedure, you may experience mild cramping or spotting, which typically resolves within a few days. A follow-up appointment is scheduled 4-6 weeks after insertion to check placement and ensure there are no complications.
Best Time in Cycle for IUD Insertion
- The best time for IUD placement is during your period, as the cervix is naturally softer.
- If you are switching from another form of birth control, your doctor will provide guidance on the timing.
IUD Safety & Considerations
IUDs are highly effective, but it’s important to be aware of potential risks:
- Expulsion (3-5%) – The IUD may be pushed out, typically within the first few months. Perforation (<1 in 1000 cases) – In rare cases, the IUD may puncture the uterine wall during insertion.
- Infection (<1 in 200 cases) – We screen all patients in-house to minimize this risk.
- Hormonal side effects (1-10%) – Some users may experience acne, breast tenderness, nausea, headaches, or mood changes (more common with Mirena than Kyleena).
- Irregular bleeding & cramping – More common with copper IUDs, but often improves over time.
